UK-based cable operator NTL Inc has promised to create the UK’s fastest internet access service after signing a deal with 3Com to supply cable modems. The service will be based on US Data Over Cable Service Industry Specification (DOCSIS) and is designed to open the way for home shopping, flexible working and distance learning. 3Com also see it leading to home networks as, with the addition of a hub, each modem can support up to 16 devices. NTL, whose cable services cover a quarter of UK homes, plans to roll out the cable modems later in the year.
