The battle between Unix and Windows NT for hearts and minds is intensifying with figures from the independent IT market research company International Data Corp showing overall high end systems market growth up 54% between the first quarter of 1996 and the same period this year, but the European Unix server market up only 9.1%. The company attributes this to Windows NT attacking its rival in the LAN-server and low to midrange markets. The Framingham, Massachusetts-based company attributed the relatively low growth of Unix to the emergence of new products challenging traditional Massively Parallel and Symmetric Multi-Processing systems in the High End and high Midrange Unix server segments. IDC says IBM Corp and Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG both showed strong growth with new entrant Sequent Computer Systems Inc also making gains with sales of its ccNUMA Intel based systems.
