Discussions regarding Israel’s participation in the US led internet 2 project have been taking place in Jerusalem this week. Nelson Menat and Steve Goldstein of the National Science Foundation met with Israeli Science Minister Michael Eitan. They will also meet with key figures involved in planning a new high-bandwidth internet backbone in Israel known as ADInet. An Israeli government appointed committee is currently looking at the various technical issues involved. The group is headed by Zohar Zisappel of the RAD Group and the Israeli Electronics Industry Association. But there is a problem. Israel’s participation cost is expected to be high; the Finance Ministry is thought to be unwilling to allocate new funds for the project which will possibly amount to tens of millions of dollars.
