Tandem Computers Inc’s Ungermann-Bass Inc in Santa Clara has announced the Net/One MS OS/2 LAN Manager network operating system based on Microsoft Corp’s LAN Manager, enabling OS/2 and MS-DOS micros to access OS/2 servers and claiming to be the first to support MS-DOS boxes: unfortunately 3Com Corp made the same claim for its 3+Open line, throwing in Apple Macs for good measure (CI No 1,038). Ungermann also introduced the NIUps intelligent adaptor for PS/2 Micro Channel: it connects the machines to an Ethernet using either XNS or TCP/IP protocols, and there’s a NIUps/TR adaptor to link to Token Rings. It has 512Kb to 1Mb memory with remote network boot feature so that users can load MS-DOS or run applications from a server to configure micros and send out soft ware without using disk drives. It emulates Digital Communications Associates’ IRMA card and IBM’s 3278 Coaxial Adaptor, so Net/One users can run existing micro-to mainframe applications. Open Syst ems and IBM NETBEUI/DLC protocol support is promised. Net/One MS OS/2 LAN Manager is $3,000 per ser ver, or $1,000 for an entry system for no more than five users. The NIUps is $1,095 and available now.
