Justifying its firm rating on the London Stock Exchange, where US buying pushes it to new highs almost every day, Racal Telecommunications Plc is winning cellular business all around the globe, and the latest port of call is Malta, where the posts and telecommunications authority, Telemalta, has chosen the firm as its partner in establishing the island’s cellular telephone service. Racal Telecom, with an 80% stake in the joint venture, has pledged to invest around UKP4.5m in the network; it will consist of one exchange and nine base stations, and adopt the ETACS 900 standard. The 20-year licence gives Racal the right to operate a network covering three Maltese islands, and the assorted vessels off the island’s shores. Racal hopes to attract wealthy holidaymakers with the new system.
