There was a time, many moons ago, when Texas Instruments Inc held the sort of place in the printer market now held by Hewlett-Packard Co. But the business has withered to the point where it is surplus to requirements, and once a printer business is no longer wanted on voyage, it tends to get sold to Genicom Corp, last resting place of the once mighty Centronics printer empire. Genicom says it has signed an agreement with Texas to acquire its worldwide printer and related supplies business for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition includes Texas Instrument’s family of Omni 800 impact printers, travel document printers and microLaser line of non-impact printers, plus supplies and consumables. The acquisition does not include any Texas facilities or manufacturing operations, but Genicom will offer employment to many Texas Instrument engineering, marketing and sales employees currently in the printer unit.
