EMC Corp may be making a fortune and eating IBM Corp’s monthly allowance of protein every week with its disk array subsystems, but the Hopkinton, Massachusetts company doesn’t intend to be left at the table if the market moves away from its core products, and is looking to diversify further. It reckons that the video-on-demand business still has room for another player or two and has begun development of video-on-demand storage applications. It has licensed microcode from a leading computer company which it did not name, and hired the engineering team that developed the code – Digital Equipment Corp is selling so much of the seed corn these days that no-one would be suprised if the company turned out to be DEC. EMC says the newly licensed code should offer continuous high performance video service on a network or workstation at low cost.
