Novonyx Inc, in the wake of news of its sudden re-assimilation by majority owner Novell Inc (CI No 3,325), announced the first shipments of the integrated Novell and Netscape products it has been working on since last March, which will be marketed by all three companies. The announcement was likely timed to deflect attention away from the power play that appears to have resulted in the assumption of control of Novonyx by Novell executive VP Chris Stone and the reported ouster of Novonyx chief executive Rob Hicks. Novell is reining in the unit that it sees as strategic to its overall business plan at the risk of leaving some Novonyx employees very unhappy. Novonyx says the new Netscape server software enables users to develop JavaScript web applications on NetWare servers and provides access to Oracle applications over the web from NetWare. It also supports internet messaging protocols on NetWare, supports all web-enabled NetWare application on Netscape and provides NetWare Directory Services integration with LDAP Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. It also offers administration through Netscape Mission Control or NetWare Administrator and full support Netscape’s Navigator and Communicator clients. The products shipping include a $1,300 Netscape Enterprise Server for NetWare, and a $2,000 Professional Edition of the same product – which includes a full development and deployment version of Oracle Server for NetWare – as well as a $1,300 Netscape Messaging Server with a 50-user license and a $300 Netscape FastTrack Server.
