Novell Inc is taking very seriously the NetWare Security holes discovered by Leiden University in the Netherlands: so seriously that all press comment is being re-directed back to the US – and regional country operations are holding their peace; the University worked out that hackers could get supervisor information off the wire using protocol analysers and the company has responded with a two-phase encryption programme; the first phase enhancements, which the company says should be easily added to existing networks, will be delivered to evaluation partners within a week or so; more advanced phase two encryption protection will come out early next year; the problem is that both systems will adversely affect server performance, but it says it doesn’t know by how much.
