According to Friedman’s latest blog entry, Waltham, Massachusetts-based Novell has recently added Tor Lillkvist to the Novell Desktop team, with his major project being to port the Evolution email, calendaring, and address book client to Windows.

Lillkvist has previously worked on open source projects to help port the GIMP image editing tool and Gtk+ user interface development toolkit to Windows, and at Novell will continue along similar lines, according to Friedman, helping various parts of the Linux stack run better on Windows.

Part of this will be assisting on the port of the Gnome Beagle desktop search tool to Windows, followed by the Evolution port. According to Friedman, there is no timeline for the delivery of this port, or even a development plan at this early stage, but interested parties will be able to track the development via the Ximian mailing list.

Friedman co-founded Ximian with Miguel de Icaza in 1999 and the company went on to develop Evolution and many other Gnome desktop technologies, before being acquired by Novell in August 2003. Evolution is now a component of the Novell Linux Desktop.
