Novell Inc has hired one of the original Java development team from Sun Microsystems Inc to be its vice president, strategic development. Mike Sheridan, one of the three original members of Sun’s Green Project that spawned Java, will report directly to Novell chief executive officer Eric Schmidt, and work with Novell’s business and development and product teams to identify new Java, NDS Directory Services and NetWare projects. Sheridan co-founded the Green Project in 1990 alongside James Gosling and Patrick Naughton (CI No 3,416), and worked with Schmidt at Sun on Java strategy. Most recently, Sheridan was working on Sun’s Persona project, which is concentrating on the development of small message collection server for small businesses and personal users (CI No 3,345).
