The Waltham, Massachusetts-based company announced plans to open source its Build Service in April 2006, in order to enable openSUSE members to contribute directly to the development process as well as download the code, report bugs, and suggest changes.

The new build service will become the development platform for future SUSE Linux distributions, replacing the internal Autobuild technology, but will also enable users to create their own Linux distributions to meet a particular use case or need.

The latter will be helped by the release of the KIWI systems imaging tool for the creation of live media, including USB stick systems live CD/DVD distributions, and Xen-based virtual images.
