NOVELL ADDS SUPPORT FOR MULTIPLE ELECTRONIC MAIL STANDARDS

By CBR Staff Writer

Novell Inc turned its attention to electronic mail last week with the announcement of the Global Messaging Server, designed to support multiple messaging systems alongside its proprietary MHS offering. Being touted as a messaging hub, the set of NetWare Loadable Modules are set to ship early this summer. Initially it will support MHS only, but the company says that support for X400, SMTP and IBM’s SNADS protocol will follow in short order. Also, the server updates the company’s approach to directory synchronisation, adding a distributed database, replicated over multiple servers. In addition, Novell introduced the third generation of its Standard Message Format application programming interface. The new one supports long names, hierarchical naming schemes and directory synchronisation.
