The Waltham, Massachusetts-based network software vendor is now firmly involved in Linux thanks to its acquisitions of SuSE Linux AG and Ximian Inc at the tail end of 2003, but the release of GroupWise 6.5 for Linux has been in the works since April of last year.

The product includes email, calendaring, instant messaging, contact management, document management and workflow services. Support for Ximian’s Evolution email and workgroup client is scheduled for later this year to connect Linux desktops to GroupWise 6.5 for Linux, while the GroupWise Windows client and GroupWise Cross-Platform client are already supported by the Linux version.

In addition, plug-in support for the Gaim open source instant messaging client will be available in the next 30 days from the open source project to allow Linux desktop to connect directly to the GroupWise Messenger server for secure instant messaging.

The product is due for release on April 15 and will support both Novell’s own SuSE Linux Enterprise Server and Red Hat Inc’s Enterprise Linux distributions.

Meanwhile, Novell has also added patch-management capabilities for Windows systems to its ZENworks systems management suite, care of patch-management specialist PatchLink Corp.

Based on Scottsdale, Arizona-based PatchLink’s Update patch management software, Novell’s ZENworks Patch Management features functionality for automatically assessing patch management risks, automating patch deployment and ensuring compliance with software and security policies.

Novell will release ZENworks Patch Management on March 29 for an annual subscription of $18 per device.
