The new product, which is tagged powered by Immunix, is designed to run on Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 operating system to provide protection against external and internal attacks, viruses, and malicious hacking.

The product includes 30 pre-built profiles for operating system services, including Apache, FTP, DHCP, Postfix, Samba, OpenSSH, Sendmail, DNS, Squid and the MySQL database, and is based on technology developed by Portland, Oregon-based Immunix in conjunction with DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), which part funded its development.

The acquisition will help Waltham, Massachusetts-based Novell in the ongoing debate about whether Linux or Windows is more secure. While Linux suffers many fewer virus attacks than Windows, its popularity as a web server platform means it is often a target for hackers.
