NORTHERN TELECOM TO BE RUN BY FORMER UNISYS PRESIDENT

By CBR Staff Writer

This will have the maple leaves rattling in a frenzy, but Northern Telecom Ltd, jewel in Canada’s high technology crown, is to be run by an American when Edmund Fitzgerald retires as chairman in April next year: Paul Stern, who resigned as president of Unisys Corp in 1987 after differences with the boss and was a leading light in the Bush campaign – whereas chairman Michael Blumenthal was Jimmy Carter’s Treasury Secretary – takes over as chief executive from Fitzgerald now, and will step up to chairman from vice-chairman in 15 months.
