Northern Telecom Ltd has joined the Advanced Network & Services Inc non-profit organisation formed in 1990 by MCI Communications Inc, IBM Corp, and the Merit organisation of nine universities in the state of Michigan to develop a new broadband fibre network infrastructure and applications for speech, data, image, video, and multimedia communications for academic, research, and government use across the US; Advanced Network & Services is under contract to Merit to operate and manage the National Science Foundation’s NSFnet high-capacity backbone data network, which makes up a large part of the Internet.
