NORTHERN TELECOM INVESTS TO ENTER POINT-OF-SALE MARKET

Northern Telecom Ltd is moving into electronic point-of-sale with purchase of a 30% stake in International Verifact Inc for about $2m. It has options on further shares up to December 1989 to give it a 46% stake, 32.7% on a fully diluted basis. The Canadian has also agreed a joint venture with Verifact to go after business in point-of-sale, security and Smart Card sectors.
