Don’t take the fact that Northern Telecom Ltd is in partnership with Ionica L3 Ltd on its radio telephone technology too seriously: it is just one of several different such systems that the Canadian is building and if it generates no other business apart from that with Ionica and the orders won in Finland, Northern Telecom won’t be wailing; in the US it has a five-year $100m agreement with Omnipoint Corp to supply the equipment for a Personal Communications Services network to serve the New York major trading area, and this one will be based on Omnipoint’s PCS2000 spread spectrum radio frequency access technology and Northern’s distributed radio networking equipment – and the two have signed a separate agreement to develop low-cost, full mobility Personal Communications Services networks based on the same technology to be offered to others.
