St Petersburg cellular operator North-West GSM has started operating its Groupe Speciale Mobile cellular communication network. The company has built 12 base stations, investing a total of $20m. At present, the number of users is about 300. North West GSM was set up two years ago and licensed in the beginning of 1994. It has two rivals in St Petersburg: SPT and Delta Telecom. North-West GSM was formed in St Petersburg as a joint venture between Noorwegian Nortelinvest, Sweden’s Telia AB’s international wing and Telecom Finland in co-operation with the St Petersburg-based firms A/O Mezhdugorodniy Telephone, AO S-Pb Mezhdunarodnaya and A/O Lensvyaz.
