The three-year contract will ensure the police’s 2,500 officers and support staff will be able to keep in touch via email, a mission-critical service for the force.
First off, Unisys will design a new infrastructure to support the migration from the current Exchange 2003 platform to Exchange 2007. All this data will be replicated and held on a remote platform to ensure disaster recovery. Unisys will then provide a hosted email service from its Virginia Centre of Excellence back to the police in Wales.
Outsourcing its email management frees up the police IT department from labour-intensive daily tasks, such as inbox management and email infrastructure maintenance, enabling employees to concentrate on technology that can enhance productivity of front-line police officers.
“Our officers are increasingly using BlackBerry devices to access line-of-business applications and email in the field, so we need to know we can rely on an effective and fully operational system around the clock,” said Geoff Bradley, IM director at North Wales Police.
