Northern Telecom Ltd will supply and install an island-wide fixed wireless communications network in Sri Lanka. It was chosen by Lanka Bell Pte Ltd, in which Singapore-listed Transmarco Ltd has a 60.5% stake through its subsidiary Transasia Telecom, which was awarded a 20-year public carrier license in Sri Lanka in January. Northern Telecom said the network would provide a national domestic telephone service using its Proximity I 13.5GHz fixed wireless access technology, delivering 100,000 new lines by 2000. Trials of Proximity wireless access technology are being conducted in Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America. Northern Telecom also won a contract to implement a Proximity T cellular network in Vietnam over the next four months.
