The American University in Cairo (AUC) will relocate in 2008 from its 7.3 acre site in Cairo to a complex currently under construction at its new 260 acre campus. The new City of Learning campus is being designed to include the latest communications services to create a technologically advanced and environmentally sensitive complex for 5,500 full-time students and 1,500 faculty and staff, with room for further expansion.

The new integrated voice and data network from Nortel will help increase communications efficiencies for AUC staff and students, while also providing high levels of mobility to users. Secure access both within the campus and remotely will be ensured by Nortel Security solutions.

At the core of the Nortel solution for AUC is the Nortel Ethernet routing switch (ERS) 8600 connected to ERS 5520 and 5510, which is designed to provide a resilient, secure and intelligent network.

Mobile communications for campus staff and students will be provided through Nortel wireless area network coverage, which ensures secure high-speed wireless access within the campus from more than 370 access points.

MCS 5100 will enable new collaboration capabilities among students, faculty and campus staff, while Nortel’s Communication Server 1000 IP telephony system will provide advanced telephony features and unified messaging services for college staff connected through 3200 IP handsets.
