NORTEL TO BUILD $64M CELLULAR NETWORK IN BOLIVIA

By CBR Staff Writer

Northern Telecom Ltd has signed a $64m supply agreement with Millicom International Cellular SA subsidiary Telefonica Celular de Bolivia SA to build and operate what it claims is Latin America’s largest, high-capacity fixed cellular network, using advanced Proximity digital wireless technology. Scheduled for implementation over the next three years, the turnkey network from Nortel could ultimately serve more than 100,000 subscribers in La Paz and El Alto. The network will vastly increase Bolivia’s telephone density. Currently, Bolivia has eight million people and 300,000 phone lines, or less than four phones per hundred people.
