NORTEL LOOKS AT SPINNING OFF NON-CORE BUSINESSES

Northern Telecom Ltd is looking at copying Newbridge Networks Corp and selling or spinning off some noncore businesses into partly-owned subsidiaries. We definitely have a view that there are certain businesses that we have today, while they’re strong, could be stronger if they were managed differently – with partners, as opposed to owned by Northern Telecom, chief executive Jean Monty said. [There are] units that are inside Nortel that are basically complements to the offerings we give customers but not necessarily core to the competency we are trying to build for the long-term… the networking competency.
