NORTEL HITS SETBACK IN BID FOR VME ROYALTIES

By CBR Staff Writer

Northern Telecom Ltd is currently battling with the VMEbus industry trade association, VITA, over patent claims that Nortel is making over the VME bus. Nortel has been approaching companies making VMEbus components, boards and systems for royalties. But according to EETimes, sleuths at VITA have hunted down old VMEbus equipment from 1992 that pre-dates the Nortel claims. Nortel is now said to be reconsidering its position. If approved, royalty payments would apply to the newer VME64 and CompactPCI buses as well as traditional VME.
