Northern Telecom Ltd is to spend around $195m (Cdn $270m) on an extension of its global development center for optical networks, and a four-year capital expenditure program in its existing Saint-Laurent facility. The investment includes an additional 1,000 staff over four years, though the company anticipates a net staff increase of 500. The 400,000 square foot optical facility, the first phase of a one million sqaure foot site, will be situated a mile from Nortel’s Saint-Laurent, Montreal base.
