NORSK DATA UK PRESENTS NATWEST WITH WP FOR THE BLIND AND PATIALLY SIGHTED

By CBR Staff Writer

Norsk Data UK has presented the National Westminster Bank with 10 word processors specially designed for the blind and partially sighted: the system is built around a Norsk Data OWS-55 workstation running standard word processing software, and incorporating a Vertplus voice synthesiser linked directly to the keyboard; developed in the UK at Norsk Data’s Newbury plant the system reads words to the operator via a speaker or headset as they are typed, and checks them for spelling mistakes against a database of 100,000 words; the machines were donated by Norsk to mark the sale of its 1,000th Wordplex computer to the bank, and Norsk is planning to market the thing in the UK.
