Control Data founder William Norris has long believed that better understanding between East and West would follow closer trade links, and after his retirement from CDC, he established the William C Norris Institute to further his beliefs. Norris has long been equally messianic about the benefits of computer-aided education, and, bringing his two great themes together, the Soviet Academy of Sciences and the Zodiak Computer Centre in Moscow have joined forces with his Foundation to create computer software and courseware. The Zodiak co-op, born as a result of the Soviet administration’s commitment to perestroika reconstruction – will have a controlling interest in the venture. The first program, says the Newsbytes wire, will be based on a Soviet computer science course that is presently textbooks and graphic simulation-based. The text will be translated into English and prepared for use on computers. Project manager is the Educational Testing Service at Princeton, New Jersey.
