Vertu’s range consists of devices encased in various precious metals and jewels. The firm, which will be run independently from its parent, has hired 200 staff as well as top quality jewellers and craftsmen to help make the phones.

Nokia hopes that the new brand of phones will boost slumping mobile phone sales. The decline in sales, due to the saturated market, has already prompted Nokia to ax 4700 jobs.

The phones will be available worldwide from January 21 onwards.
