Nokia wins major network contract

Nokia has won a GSM expansion contract with VoiceStream. The deal will last three years and is effective immediately.For $300 million, Nokia will supply VoiceStream with extra core and radio-access network, which at present carries 6.3 million subscribers in the US.

The expansion deal will make GSM the leading platform in the US. VoiceStream has been contracting Nokia’s services since 1995 and Deutche Telecom, parent to VoiceStream, has chosen the Finnish company on numerous occasions.

But this deal comes at a particularly crucial time for Nokia following the its disappointing mid Q1 update. Network business revenues are expected to be down 25% on the previous year causing considerable worry for investors. The company now aims to control 35% of the wireless infrastructure market, and this new deal is a good place to start.
