So far Nokia has invested over $1.7 billion in China and has established over twenty offices, eight joint ventures and now, two R&D centers in China, employing over 5,500 employees. This center specifically will be looking to recruit up to 500 people over the next four years. With Zhejiang University right on the doorstep, Nokia expects to also be able to recruit well-educated personnel in Hangzhou and surrounding areas

Research at the center, due to commence at the start of 2002, will be based around developing new software and software platforms for Nokia’s 3G mobile networks.

Work at the center is expected to be conducted jointly with a local partner company from 2003. The partner company will be also responsible for employing most personnel.

Sauli Salo, senior vice president of Mobile Core Networks at Nokia Networks said in a statement to the press, With this new R&D center, China will strengthen its position as part of Nokia’s global R&D network. For Nokia, China is the second largest market. We are convinced, based on the excellent cooperation done so far, that this project will be a long-term success for all parties involved.
