Nokia’s chief publically confirmed today that the mobile maker is considering a manoeuvre into the laptop market, a move that has been rumoured since last year.
Speaking to Finnish national broadcaster YLE, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said the company was “looking very actively” at the possibility, suggesting the likelihood of Nokia manufactured notebooks and netbooks could soon become a reality.
Market-watchers consider the manufacturing know-how, procurement clout and supply chain expertise that is held by the Finnish business could position the vendor well in the highly competitive segment.
Explaining his thinking, Kallasvuo said “We don’t have to look even for five years from now to see that what we know as a mobile phone and what we know as a PC are in many ways converging.”
Suppliers to PC markets have started to make exploratory moves themselves, most notably with Acer testing the market appetite for mobile phones and Dell suggesting its move into the smartphone segment.
