Nokia Oyj says that it is first to market with a corporate wireless application protocol server, with the commercial release of the Nokia WAP Server 1.0. The software, which has been in beta since May, will be initially distributed to companies such as IBM, Andersen and ICL. Nokia describes the software as an open server platform for mobile applications that enables to customers control the access to data traffic between a wireless network and the internet or a corporate intranet. The software is the first to implement the Wireless Transportation Layer Security (WTLS) protocol, which is carried over the WAP Protocol Stack, a radio data transport protocol. The WAP Server 1.0 for corporate users starts at $10,000.
