Its claim relates to chipsets supplied by Texas Instruments. It said TI and Qualcomm entered into a Patent Portfolio License in 2000. Nokia said that if its claim succeeds, Qualcomm will be prevented in Europe from enforcing its patents in relation to Nokia handsets incorporating such chipsets.
The licensing deal between Qualcomm and Nokia, thought to be worth $500m a year, expires in April, and the two companies have bombarded each other with legal actions in a bid to force a settlement on their terms.
