The contract is for the provincial broadband access network and in the initial phase ShanDong Telecom plans to offer broadband access services in four large cities in ShanDong province, in the Northern region of China.

Deliveries have already begun with Nokia supplying its Broadband IP Access solution including D50e, modems and a full range of related services.

We chose Nokia not only for their ability to deliver an excellent technical solution but for their insight and knowledge regarding marketing broadband DSL services to the consumer, our customers, said Mr Liu DeSeng, chief director of ShanDong Telecom Planning & Construction Bureau.

This is an important expansion deal for Nokia as it not only underlines Nokia ability to deliver robust broadband infrastructure in a demanding environment, but in this case Nokia undertook a series of joint marketing activities with the customer to help push awareness and understanding of the merits of broadband DSL in the province, affirmed Andrew Page, director, Broadband Systems, Nokia Networks China in a media statement.

The Nokia Broadband IP Access solution includes the D50e, a flexible, two-stage ATM-transmission based DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) platform, which allows operators to offer a complete range of DSL technologies, including ADSL and g.SHDSL from a single system. Working with Nokia’s other IP (Internet Protocol) products, the Nokia D50e helps operators to establish an optimum DSL broadband access system, taking the Broadband industry from fast internet access to interactive media and streaming video services.

Nokia has continuously strengthened its market position as a leading supplier of mobile and broadband network systems and mobile phones in China. China is Nokia’s second largest market in the world. Nokia’s investment in China has surpassed $1.7 billion. Nokia has established over twenty representative offices, eight joint ventures and one R&D center, with over 5,500 employees in China.
