Finnish phone maker Nokia has said that it will use Qualcomm’s chipset in its first smartphones using Microsoft’s Windows Phone devices.
Nokia had said that its next generation smartphones will come with Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system (OS), which is available only on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip due to strict design guidelines of Microsoft.
A Nokia spokesman told Reuters, "The first Nokia based on Windows Phone will have the Qualcomm chipset," adding, "Our aim is to build a vibrant ecosystem around Nokia and the Windows Phone OS and with that intent we are naturally continuing discussions with a number of chipset suppliers for our future product portfolio."
Microsoft has said that it will expand the supplier base for chipsets in future.
In February, Qualcomm had unveiled a new mobile processor architecture for the Snapdragon family.
The new processor micro-architecture, code-named Krait, in the next-gen Snapdragon provides speeds of up to 2.5GHz per core and delivers higher overall performance, and uses lower power than currently available ARM-based CPU cores.
The chipset will be available in single, dual and quad-core versions and include a new Adreno GPU series with up to four 3D cores, and integrated multi-mode LTE modem.
The Snapdragon chipsets will include the single-core MSM8930, the dual-core MSM8960 and the quad-core APQ8064.
The company said that all chipsets in the family will integrate a quad-combo of connectivity offerings including: Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and FM and support for near field communication (NFC), stereoscopic 3D (S3D) video and photo capture and playback.
