Finland-based mobile phone manufacturer Nokia is planning to launch a new low-cost smartphone based on the Google’s Android operating system.
The new smartphone is expected to be unveiled at the upcoming Mobile World Congress, scheduled to be held in Barcelona by the end of this month.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the new Android-based device would target growing markets and will be devoid of some higher-end, custom Android features.
Previously, Microsoft had partnered with Nokia to make a comeback in the smartphone market, which was dominated by Samsung’s Android and Apple iOS devices.
Nokia is in the final stages of selling its handset division to Microsoft under a €5.4bn ($7.4bn) deal signed in September 2013 that will hand over Nokia’s handset business and patent licenses to Microsoft.
