Nokia introdues mapping service ‘HERE’

HERE brand is expected to improve mobile experience for users everywhere

Finnish mobile maker Nokia has introduced a new location services ‘Here’, which is claimed to deliver best maps and location experiences across multiple screens and operating systems.

Aimed at inspiring new generation of location services and devices, the new HERE brand is expected to improve mobile experience for users everywhere.

Nokia president and CEO Stephen Elop said people want great maps, and HERE brings together Nokia’s location offering to deliver people a better way to explore, discover and share their world.

"Additionally, with HERE we can extend our 20 years of location expertise to new devices and operating systems that reach beyond Nokia," Elop said.

"As a result, we believe that more people benefit from and contribute to our leading mapping and location service."

The mobile maker is also releasing maps application for Apple’s iOS under the HERE brand that includes offline capabilities, voice-guided walk navigation, and public transport directions.

Nokia revealed its plan to acquire a California based Earthmine to offer 3D street views for its maps, in addition, it has also collaborated with Mozilla to add maps to the Firefox mobile operating system which is scheduled for release in 2013.

Nokia Location & Commerce Executive Vice President, responsible for the HERE brand Michael Halbherr said maps are hard to get right, but location is revolutionizing how the technology is being used to engage with the real world.

"That’s why we have been investing and will continue to invest in building the world’s most powerful location offering, one that is unlike anything in the market today," Halbherr said.

Nokia has also released LiveSight(TM) that offers precise and spontaneous augmented reality experience by using a phone’s camera viewfinder.
