Nokia and SK Telecom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together in developing 5G mobile network technology.
The two companies will jointly research 5G, including gigabit-level data communications technology and cloud-based network, using a test bed at SK Telecom’s R&D Centre in Seoul.
Their joint goal is to demonstrate 5G in 2018 and to commercialise the service in 2020. A particularly focus would be on developing cmWave/mmWave 5G technology, which uses wideband spectrum resources from 6GHz or higher.
Nokia Networks CTO, Hossein Moiin commented, "5G networks will interconnect humans, machines and things to enable very diverse use cases with extreme requirements. Nokia Networks is driving 5G research and standardization with SK Telecom and collaborating with industry to expand the human possibilities of the connected world."
"By joining hands with Nokia, we expect to accelerate our speeds toward the development of core 5G technologies," added Choi Jin-sung, Executive Vice President and Head of Corporate R&D Center. "Envisioning an era where all things and people are organically connected, SK Telecom will continue to bring innovative changes to the mobile network structure."
SK Telecom are establishing a reputation in the 5G sphere, having also partnered with Samsung back in October.
