NO MORE “EASY COMPETITION”

IBM’s new chairman John Akers is turning out to be very good copy, and he came out with a splendid declaration that was not included in the report of his speech in Detroit the other week (CI No 619): The day of easy competition has ended, he insisted – and we face 19m Taiwanese, 43m Koreans, 120m Japanese and a billion Chinese who get up at six o’clock in the morning, do callisthenics, and work six days a week for modest wages.
