Despite the discrimination towards women that is often highlighted within the computing world, women are not being left behind when it comes to pay.
New research has shown that there is no significant difference in earnings between men and women in the computing industry.
The study, Graduating to a Pay Gap, examined graduates’ pay across various professions and looked at disparities when it comes to gender.
"Our analysis shows that occupations like nursing; engineering; and math, computer, and physical science occupations are the best-paying jobs for women one year out of college," said authors Christianne Corbett and Catherine Hill. "These tend to be occupations that are well paying throughout a career as well."
While the general earning gap between men and women is around 6.6%, those working in engineering, maths, computer or physical science professions have the top rates of equity between genders.
In fact, the tech industry has a history of equal pay for equal work. According to Quartz, a longitudinal study of female engineers in the 1980s showed a wage penalty of "essentially zero" for younger cohorts and today, the two highest paying professions with wage equality are in technology (computer scientist and engineer).
