Nissan Motors and Japanese telecoms company DDI Corp have set up a consortium which includes US West and British Telecom to establish Tokyo’s third cellular communications service; the consortium is called TU-KA Cellular Tokyo Incand Nissan and DDI both have a 26% stake while US West and BT have taken 2% and 5% respectively; the service will be digital and should begin operation in 1994; the Japanese government recently announced the availability of two extra cellular licences in each of its 12 administrative regions to compete with the two in each region already in operation; the service will operate in the 1.5GHz waveband.
