And Nippon Steel Corp followed up the announcement with IBM Japan by saying that it will establish four computer and communications systems subsidiaries: Nippon Steel Information and Communications Systems Co, wholly owned by Nippon Steel, will take over its existing Nippon Steel Computer Systems Co and continue to provide development and maintenance of computer systems for its parent; NS&I System Service Corp is the name for the joint venture with IBM, in which the steel firm will have 44%; it will have 49% of Nittetsu Hitachi Systems Engineering Inc to develop office systems based on Hitachi multifunction workstations; and NCI Systems Integration will be a joint venture with C Itoh for development of large scale systems; the combined workforce of the four new firms will be doubled to 5,000 by 1992; Nippon Steel already has a joint venture with Concurrent Computer Corp, and the company looks for half its projected sales of $31,500m in 1997 to come from non-steel areas, with computers and communications making up 20% of the total.
