Silicon Graphics Inc’s Nippon Silicon Graphics Inc has taken a decisive step to establish a software centre for the customisation, particularly language customisation, porting and applications development in Kawasaki, just outside Tokyo: the move follows its announcement in August of its plans to build a pilot production plant in Japan: the Technology Centre in Japan will oversee operations in China, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong as well as Japan, and engineers will be brought from those countries to do national language implementations; the pilot plant is intended to give the Mountain View company an idea of the benefits it might gain by establishing a full-scale production plant, by comparing the cost of doing assembly in Japan using Japanese labour and components sourced locally with the current export-to-Japan approach.
