One of the great attractions of big inward investors like Fujitsu Ltd is that they bring a straggle of camp-followers in their wake, and Nippon Silica Glass Europe Ltd, wholly owned by chemicals company Tosoh Corp, is to build a plant in County Durham to produce quartz products for semiconductors, investing UKP1.5m with UKP250,000 of that coming from Regional Selective Assistance provided by the Department of Trade & Industry; it will start operating the plant at Greencroft Industrial Park near Fujitsu’s Aycliffe chip plant, in summer 1995; it will initially hire a modest 13 local employees by the end of 1995.
