Nippon Digital Equipment is to begin final assembly of the VAX 8530, 8550, 8700 and 8800 at its Chiba plant near Tokyo: in the year since the release of the 8000 series in Japan 350 machines have been sold – all fully imported; the plant at Chiba was previously used for quality assurance but DEC will now set up an assembly line and use it extensively for testing in order to offer shorter delivery cycles and better maintenance support.
