Nintendo of America has announced that it is to launch its first color Game Boy later this year. The device will use new technology, of which no details have yet been announced, to generate up to 56 colors on-screen out of a palette of 32,000. A new screen design will also enable players to use the handheld in or out of doors. Howard Lincoln, Chairman of Nintendo America, said, For years, our players have asked us for a Game Boy that could play…in color. But…the high demand on battery life made it impossible. The device will also run games that were developed for the original Game Boy. However, these games will only show up to 10 colors on-screen, selected by the user. In addition, the new handheld can be connected to the Nintendo 64 console. The original black and white Nintendo Game Boy has sold over 60 million units in the ten years since its release. The color version will initially be launched in Japan, America and Europe.
