Americans go in for knocking the competition by name in their commercials much more than do UK advertisers, who tend to believe that naming a competitor is a free plug, no matter how derogatory the terms – but sometimes it can go too far: Atari Corp has received a writ from the Family Computer firm Nintendo of America over a 30-second television commercial that compares the new Atari XE Game System with the Nintendo Family Computer system; it has been denied a temporary restraining order to stop airing the commercial prior to the hearing.
