The company, which claims to be the first to create commercially viable 3D integrated circuits, believes that this technology is especially relevant in portable electronics, offering programming flexibility to developers as well as lower manufacturing costs for publishers – and Nintendo apparently agrees.
Matrix’s cost and density advantages over existing technologies support the memory requirements of our portable video game machine, according to Nintendo’s Japanese PR manager, Yasuhiro Minagawa. We believe Matrix’s technology will help us to make our exciting game titles more efficiently.
No timescale for adopting the new memory technology in GBA cartridges has been suggested as yet; and more importantly, just how appreciable the cost benefits of using Matrix’s technology, and whether these price reductions will be passed on to publishers or consumers, remains to be seen.
